I never get tired of Joes music. But at this show.. I believe the airfans were not working. I had to walk out of the show half way because it seemed I was about to faint as a friend of mine did. I promised myself this was the last time I was going to go to The Tabernacle. but(since then..I have been back).

Wow This show was great. I mean midtown was good, but this was just amazing. I will say that i wasnt to happy with Steve Vai. The guy worries more about how he looks. John was great, he blew vai off the stage. Satriani of course is the master, and the other guys know it. The best part of the show was when satch said( I just come to play my guitar). He dosent need the big fancy show like Vai, he just plays from the heart. I wish Stu would have done a solo. The jam session at the end was a dream come true. I always wanted to see Satch play some Hendrix. I mean after all without Hendrix, i dought their would be a Satch. The show was great, and i loved it . It changed my views on the guitar forever. I love you Satch, you get better each time. John was greatas well, but Vai i just did not care for.I respect vai, but i just dont like his style of playing. Well, i hope to see Satriani play with John again sometime. It was so amazing.... Thanks Satch, for you and all the G3 performers Brandon Smtih AKA Alien_Boy

Joe was Joe. That is all I need to say. Nobody comes close. Excellent technique and excellent writing. I have seen him at the Cotton Club, the Fox (twice, methinks) and now the Tabernacle. He never fails to amaze. It was really good to see and hear Steve Vai...the last time I saw him was at the Masquerade...probably 8 years ago or so...it had been too long, at any rate. After reading all of the other reviews that have been written so far, I guess I will have to be the kid who said "the king has no clothes": Petrucci sucked. He was terrible. I hope Joe cans him down the line (I know he won't). He may have the fingers but he has no clue what to do with them. He played so many useless notes. He might be able to play a guitar (and not really all that good) but what he really needs to do is polish up on the writing. His material (songs) was so boring. It was like being forced to listen to Kenny G. Pure anguish. Anyway, keep up the good work Joe, but let's see some real talent with G3. How about Michael Schenker, Ulrich Roth, Zak Wylde or even Jay Mascis. Rock 'n' Roll on!

G3 was awesome. I loved seeing petrucci up there with steve and joe.Petrucci opened it up with some heavy but beautiful stuff, and joe closed it up with his regular "let's groove baby" guitar playing. The only thing that I thought sucked about G3 was steve vai's sound was too raunchy and agrivating. Also, Steve seemed to spend more time licking and stomping on the guitar more than he did playing it, which was good for some, but not good for me.

The G3 rendition of Voodoo Child would have made Jimi very proud. I was hoping to be close enough to the stage to closely watch Joe's hands, but I didn't get tickets until the morning of the show, so I had to sit in the window of the fourth floor balcony (You couldn't have gotten further from the stage!). Joe's hands move so fast that it probably wouldn't have helped to be front row. The performance was awesome - there were several times that I thought Stu's bass licks might rattle the windows out. I first saw Joe at the Fox Theatre (Atlanta) during his Flying in a Blue Dream tour. I'm always amazed at how he "plays" feedback. No matter what venue he plays, he always seems to find all of the "sweet spots" on the stage for feedback. His technique is simply phenomonal. Although I really went to G3 to see Joe, John P. and Steve V. blew me away too. It was really cool to have Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai together. Also glad to see Stu Hamm. How in the hell do Stu and Billy make so much damn noise with just 4 strings??? (yeah I know, they have 5 strings too). I have all of Stu's solo albums and have never figured out how he plays Moonlight Sonata or Linus/Lucy on a bass guitar.... Thanks G3 for another memorable performance! You have inspired so many new artists. You are all truly legends, and your music will be around much longer than all of us. A hundred years from now there will still be kids playing Satch Boogie. Hey guys - next time you pass through Hotlanta again, let me know! Gary Wright II Gary@CleverPeople.com

This concert was amazing!! My friends and I were able to escape the boredom of Wyoming and were lucky enough to see this show. We were in the front row and at the left part of the stage (right in front of Joe's pedal board!!) I must say that I had heard very little of Petrucci's music before the concert, but it took mere seconds of his amazing playing to realize that he deserves to be called one of the best guitarist's that walks the earth. His set was amazing and it set the stage for the rest of the night. Steve Vai then just blew me away with his pure ability and showmanship. His band was great and his tongue harmonics were superb. I was especially happy when he played Incantation off of his "Alive in an Ultra World" cd (by the way if you don't already own it buy it asap) and then Mr. Cool Joe Satriani came on stage and played an outstanding set. Joe has a way of making the fans feel like they are truly a part of the show and this makes the concert that much more enjoyable. Then the jam at the end was everything I hoped it would be and more. La Grange and Voodoo Chile were great and then they played what is probably the greatest song ever written for guitar ....... LITTLE WING. I've always loved the Hendrix and SRV versions of this song and the G3 version was just as amazing. They kept the feel and rythym of the song while playing their own improv versions. Then they capped the night off with the G3 classic Goin Down. I would even go as far as to say that their version is superior to the SRV, Jeff Beck version and that's some very good company. One last thing to all you vetern fans out there. I just wanted to say that in another review I read there was a comment about all the teenagers in the crowd. Well I was one of them and I can truly say that I understand the greatness of this music.

I am surprised that the Tabernacle is still standing. We were packed in like sardines
and G3 rocked that mother down! It was hot as hell... and then the concert started!
The show was amazing. Although Petrucci is new to me, I was really anxious to see
his set because of all of the great feedback on this forum. I was not disappointed.
I will be loading up on his music with DT and LTE now.
I must say that VAI was the show stealer. When he and Billy Sheehan
opened with "Shy Boy" I was in awe. David Lee Who? I've read reviews from people who
say that Vai is too showy, but I didn't see that. To me that's just the way he plays.
Every motion his body makes is to ellicit some kind of sound out of his guitar.
I call it technique... not showboating. This guy is truly a master of his instrument.
He and Sheehan are the perfect pair. I loved how they harmonized and "dueled".
Sheehan hit some bass harmonics that I didn't even know were possible. They
kicked ass!
Joe Satriani was flawless. I wish he had played more of his new stuff
though. He played all three of the songs from the first G3 that are on my video. I've watched those a million times so it
would've been nice to see more new stuff like Devil's Slide. Nevertheless he, as with all of the
musicians, was totally "ON". Joe had a real connection with the audience. At one point
between songs he just stood back and smiled at the wall of cheers, whistling,
and applause that we were making. He was very modest, but we made it known that he
was the King.
We drove six hours and endured Atlanta traffic to see this concert and I must say it was worth
every second. Go see this tour and I can't wait for the DVD!!!!!

The July 19 show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta was outstanding. I knew little about John Petrucci outside of Dream Theater, but it seems he's a shredmeister deep down inside. Steve Vai was outstanding. His unusual skills (walking all over the neck, hitting harmonics with his tongue) are truly a sight to see. Not to mention Billy Sheehan was on bass! Then there's Joe. For a guitar player to witness a Joe Satriani performance is to experience inspiration and humiliation simultaneously. His playing was, once again (this is my fourth time seeing him), off the scale. And to wrap it all up Petrucci, Vai and Sheehan came out and joined Joe and bass genius Stu Hamm for four songs at the and. Their version of Voodoo Chile alone was worth the price of the ticket. I drove through two states and into a different time zone for this show and I would without hesitation do it again.

Awesome! What other way could I describe a show like that. First off being a huge Dream Theater fan I knew Petrucci was going to blow me away. Well,to say the least he did and Dave LaRue and Mike Portnoy were excellent in his support. This was the first time I have ever seen any of these three guys in concert, but I have been a longtime fan of all three. My only hope that was not fulfilled was a Portnoy drum solo, but he didn't bring his big rig, so I was not surprised. Petrucci is a master of the guitar and will only get better with age, so look out! Anyone reading this who wants to hear more of Petrucci, let me suggest some of his best work out right now. Liquid Tension Experiment, and LTE2 are two different CD's, both all instrumental and both are amazing. Also, any of the Dream Theater albums "Images and Words"(1992),"Awake"(1995),"Change of Seasons"(1995),"Falling into Infinity"(1997),"Metropolis Pt.2"(1999). All are amazing and showcase Petrucci and Portnoy more than enough. Also, one last item for drummers or guitar players check out Portnoy's instructional video "Liquid Drum Theater" or Petrucci's instructional guitar video "Rock Discipline". Okay, enough about that now to the other 2 guitar wizards. Steve Vai was flawless, and any other word I could say would not describe his performance. He blew me away with the "tongue harmonics" and his supporting cast of Billy Sheehan,Mike Mangini, and Virgil Donati were beyond amazing. Sheehan ripped apart that bass guitar the way he played and Vai and Mangini playing synchronized parts that were freaking awesome! Virgil Donati's drum solo was nothing like a Neil Peart,Mike Portnoy,or Rod Morgenstein. It was almost better! The way he spun the sticks in his hand as he played at lightning speed, what can I say?! Steve Vai is flat out amazing and I can't wait to see him again. Now on to Joe Satriani. One of my heros on guitar he was beyond perfect in playing songs of his like "Always with me,Always with you","Flying in a Blue Dream" and of course "Surfing with the Alien". What a set he played! Every song of his set I knew by heart and he extended on my knowledge by adding new material to them. I know I made a good selection in guitars when I bought the Ibanez JS100. But, he showed me why it is his model and not mine. GOOD LORD! I'm in awe of the playing he did and he is still my favorite solo instumentalist! I can only dream to be even half as good as any of the G3, and I can't wait to see any of them again. If you disagree with any of my opinions feel free to e-mail me. Thanks guys for the best show I have ever been to.

The Tabernacle was the perfect place for this show - It used to be a church, and this show was a spiritual experience! Petrucci was amazing. I've been a DT fan since the beginning, but have never gotten to see them so this was a treat for me. John's playing was impressive, and Mike Portnoy was incredible. He is simply the best drummer in music right now - when you go, be sure to pay attention to his playing, and not just the guitar.
Vai was the character of the group. It was obvious he was having a great time. I just wish he would have played more songs and showed off a little less, but lets face it, whether it's G3 or headlining, Steve is Steve, and beleives in giving his fans his best -- And always does!
Finally, Satch.......Don't take this the wrong way, but there's not much more I can say. If you've seen him before then you know what I'm talking about. Flawless technique, tremendous tone, pure power.....Joe was Joe, 'Nuff Said!
Last but not least, The Jam....HOLY SHIOT! Voodoo Chile, Little Wing, Goin' Down and LaGrange! All were excellent, and you could tell Joe, Steve, John, Stu and Billy were having too much fun. Each played TWO solos in each song. Voodoo Chile was great because all three G's played their wah pedals TOGETHER and were dead on! My only complaint is the same one that EVERYONE has had - Where was Stuuuuuu's solo?!?!? Other than that, it was a great show. Good job guys, and Thank You for an unforgettable night.

I would like to reiterate what everyone here has said about how great the show was. I've seen Petrucci before with Dream Theater, and I was not dissapointed. Having Dave LaRue on bass was the perfect choice. Then Vai came on. I was completly blown away. He plays with such emotion which can be rare. I don't mind the showboating he does, it adds an element that the cd's can't capture. My buddies and I were able to talk to all the guys from vai's band, Mike Keneally being the most frequent, before the sound checks. To bad I found out that Satch and company don't show up till much later. WE left the backstage area about 15 minutes before the doors were scheduled to be open and he still wasn't there yet. Well, I'm sure I'll get flak for this here, but Satchs set was so predictable. Yes it was great. Yes he played flawlessly. Yes it sounded exactly like the album, especially the tunes he played on the previous G3 cd. When he played SummerSong, the intro was Rock and Roll from Led Zepplin which was very cool, but then it was like I was playing my G3 cd again. Thats his style, and thats cool, but I like to be surprised a little more.

Was the greatest thing i have ever seen. John petrucci was a very good guitar player. almost like heavy metal kansas . he played for a while and then Vai took the stage. Man was I impressed. him and Sheenan really worked well together on stage. the first song that vai played was shy boy and at the end of the song makes his guitar do a wammy-bar airplane(swinging the guitar around by the Whammy bar). throughout his set steve and billy worked magic together with vai doing the levatating guitar trickwith his tremlo and sheenan swinging his guitar around.after that satriani took the stage and blew every body away. the g3 covers were really good and the show was great.

This by far was the greatest show that I have ever seen live or recorded. John Petrucci just came out and got the crowd started and then came Vai. With the reunion with Sheehan we were wondering if they would do some David Lee Roth songs and when they opened with Shy Boy it just sent chills through my spin. Also, the show that Vai put on was just immaculate. Then Satriani came out and played the perfect show like the perfectionist that he is. When they all reunited for the last show that was just the perfect ending to the perfect show. I noticed that there was a lot of young teenagers in the crowd and I just hope they realize the amount of talent they witnessed that night in Atlanta.

Awesome show! We arrived after J.P. had already started playing;
man was he awesome. He had the best sound out of the three. Vai came
next and just totally blew the roof off the house. He had an ovation that
lasted for over 5 minutes! Sheenan is an absolutely incredible bassist.
He and Vai must be related in a past life or something. Satch came last
and played a perfect show. The jam was cool, although it was hard to hear
with who was playing what with 3 guitars and 2 bassists. The Tabernacle
was sooo hot. Overall, well worth every second. I only wish I could've
gotten backstage passes. Ah well, maybe next time.

I must say, this show was awesome. First off, Petrucci's set. I've been a Dream Theatre fan for a few years now, and it was great to be able to see Petrucci and Portnoy both on stage. John showed that he is a true master of the guitar. Those songs he composed just for the g3 tour were AWESOME!. Damn this guy can play. Next, was Vai. Let me say that he is an amazing guitarist, but he is way too much of a show off. It was a rarity that he played a note w/o using his whammy bar. It's not that he sounded bad, but it's just that I would have enjoyed him more if he toned it down a little. I guess that's just how Vai is. Finally was Satriani. As usual, his blew me away. Satriani is so amazing, and his playing is so pure. I saw him last year at the HOB in Myrtle Beach, so it was a great opportunity to see him again. Joe, you the man! The final set with all three guitar gods on stage was really awesome. I think Petrucci was having some guitar problems, but he was able to overcome them. The song selection was great. The only bummer a/b the show was the heat, and the acoustics in the building. I think the tabernacle needs find a way to make the sound better in the building. But over all, the show was great, and it was well worth the 5 hour drive. Thanks guys for a great show!

Probably the best concert I have ever been to. We got lost on the way, so we only got to see the last half of Petrucci's set. Wholly crap! This guy is AMAZING! He definately deserves to be on this tour. He was so over with the crowd, I couldnt believe it. Awsome, awsome show. Next came steve vai. During his set I couldnt even cheer due to the fact that I was completely mesmerized by this man's playing. I was so amazed I couldnt even believe it. Billy was friggin great as well. This guy can play the bass!!! He sings pretty well too. Next came Joe. He was the reason why I was there, and I was not disappointed. He tore threw his songs with perfection, and style. Joe is a real class act who appeals to the entire crowd. The final jam almost brought me to tears as I saw all three G's plus sheenan and stu up there jamming to ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jeff Beck. Vai did excellent on Little Wing as did Joe on Goin Down. If only the tabernacle hadnt been so hot, it would have been a tad better. MY awards... Best Sound: John Petrucci(Vai and Satch could barely be heard past the bass) Best Stage Performance: Steve Vai.(He and Billy played to the audience like masters and definately promoted one hell of a good time. Best Overall Performance: Joe Satriani. Need I say more??? For those attending the remaing upcoming shows, GET THERE EARLY TO SEE PETRUCCI. He definately worth it, I swear. This is one concert that I will NEVER forget as long as I live. Thanks to all three for making a dream come true. Good luck on the rest of the tour.

Okay- this was without a doubt the best concert I've ever seen, and the Taberenacle was the perfect Atlanta venue for it. Petrucci's set was phenominal, and the crowd reacted well to set that was entirely new songs (Except for the closer, LTE's "Paradigm Shift"). Portnoy and LaRue were in top form as his backing band, and the roared through some amazing material. Vai was my personal favorite. He came up to his mic and said "You guys are a bunch of ANIMALS!" Then launched into "The Animal." His three part guitar harmonies with Mike and David were phenominal, and there was a great deal of interplay between him and the other musicians. He did some great tricks, like picking with his tounge and whammey bar, and picking the guitar up by the whammey bar. Then Satriani came out and performed perfect renditions of "Devil's Slide" and "Flying in a Blue Dream," then put the crowd into a frenzy with "Satch Boogie" and topped it off with "Surfing with the Alien." The highlight of the final all three performance was the cover of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child." I don't know if I'll ever see a better show. Definatly check it out. The Atlanta crowd also got treated to a special performance by Domonic Gaudious at the aftershow party, who I am a huge fan of. Great show, man!

As above show was great - place was way to hot - they could at least move some air around. The guy playing downstairs @ the Cotton Club was Dominic Gaudious - he's an awesome acoustic player ala Michael Hedges. Check out www.dominicgaudious.com for more info. He had a custom double neck guitar (cost over $10000 he said) - 12 & 6 strings with some special electronics in it. Quite a one man show. Billy Sheehan was down there checking him out, told Dominic about Steve Vai's Favored Nations label and took a couple of CDs for Steve Vai to hear.

Well that was the 9th time I've had the pleasure of seeing Lord Satriani and my 2nd G3 show, and I must say that last nights show was absolutely amazing. I was pleasantly surprised in John Petrucci's playing. I never knew that he could play that well, and it was awesome that he had Mike Portnoy playing drums with him. Next came Steve Vai, another amazingly incredible guitar player...as everyone on this site knows. I was very happy he played as many songs off of Passion And Warfare as he did. And that drum solo that Virgil Donato did was KILLER! I've seen alot of concerts and alot of great drummers, but I'd have to say that Virgil had the coolest drum solo I've seen. That spinning the sticks trick he did just blew me away! And I had no idea how good of a bass player Billy Sheehan is...WOW! Joe was, once again, on top of his game. He is one guitar player that I can never get enough of seeing in concert. I'm already looking forward to the next Joe concert. It just amazes me that 3 people can play the amount of music they do. He is definitely the man! I thing I like the best was the fact that it was my roommates first time seeing any of them. He said that he thought the show was incredible and the best show he's ever seen. I've now gotten him hooked on Joe and he'll be there with me at every show. I already can't wait for the next G3 show!

I would have to compare the show to watching the super bowl of playing the guitar. as everyone else has said, they are truly amazing. but what is very amazing to me is the imagination these guys have with their music. all technical wizardry aside, they always challenge each other and the whole world to come up with something new. i think that is what makes people come to the shows, and that's what makes these guys great. you can really tell the influence f. zappa had on steve vai, especially in the way he dresses, and has taken the playing of the guitar to another level. joe's chords in his songs match the beauty of his melody lines also. the bottom line to me is these guys take chances with their music and challenge all of us to open up their way of thinking about how the instrument is played. i think that is why they do the hendrix songs. in his day, he was the one challenging the way music should sound, and the way the guitar should be played. let me say that i don't think technically hendrix was as good as the g7 lineup (bassists, & mike k.), but what truly made hendrix great is the same qualities that these guys have. imagination, pure and simple. i hope you guys realize what an influence you have on the way the guitar is played. i personally think you guys will be in the guitar hall of fame for your contributions to modern music. one final note, i drove from little rock, ar. to atlanta to see the show, and had a blowout on the way home from the show, but it was worth the 10 hr. drive. it did rock, and it was like the super bowl.

I rated the show a 10 but the day would be more like a 7 in total. I met alot of new people while waiting 5 hours to get into the show. My two friends and I left our homes in TN at around 9am. What should have been a two hour trip to Atlanta turned into three because of road work. It was a long hot wait, but we kept telling ourselves it would be worth it. We were near the front of the line waiting when the doors opened. We basically ran in. We saw a stage imidiately and headed for it only to be told that the show was upstairs. So this put us near the front of the stage when we found the right one. The security made us move back so they could move the barrier back. In the process, some people got in front of us. Well, to shorten the story, we ended up on the second story balcony in what we deemed the best position for the show possible after everyone was in the building. The building was very crowded and in desperate need of some a/c. The show was amazing. I wasn't very familiar with John P. and company but like most reviews I've read on here, I plan to buy some of his albums to check out. Vai and Sheehan were unbelievable to say the least. They are a great pair. Satch came out and totally rocked the joint. We, the audience, were loud. Almost as loud as the guitars. The jam was a also very awesome. I give the show a 10. When it was over I had been up for 30 hours and the heat was getting to me so we headed out the exit. The exit we picked went down a fire escape. It bypassed the t-shirts and cd's that I wanted to buy and when I tried to get back in I wasn't permitted. So I didn't get my memorabilia. :( Oh well at least I did get to see Joe and company for the first time. That'll be enough of a memory to hold me I guess

The Tabernacle was such a great venue it was nice and compact so pretty much everyone on the ground level was right up there with the 3 G's!! Petrucci blew me away!! I completley wasnt expecting him to be as amazing as he was, i kinda pictured him to be a real hardcore powerchord open E type artists, but man was i wrong! This guy burned his fretboard, amazing! Next came Vai... talk about a showman! he really got the crowd going telling us how alive we were... i also loved his costume! But above all that he played incredibly, so precise... any artists that can make a song sound almost identical to an studio recording, live is very very high in my book and man did he do that. Billy Sheehan (sp?) absolutley ruled! Awsome bass player and singer, and i loved his Bass guitar with the fret marks that light up with blue lights! And Virgil Donati the drummer was soo amazing.. he did an awsome solo and pulled off this trick where he would have both stick spinning in his hand and while they are twirling he would be playing cymbals and drums... my god was that cool and the crowd ate it up!!! And next the MAN HIMSELF Joe "Guitar God" Satriani came on, more amazing than ever, he played all my favorites and then some! I could go on and on about how good Joe sounded but everyone should know that he is indescribable (word?, sp?). Stu jammed like nothing else and entertained the crowd very well. Only complaint and i mean the ONLY ONE! is that Joe really didnt move around as much as the other two, i was on the left side of the stage and he never came over, i can only guess it is because Joe really uses effects pedals alot and needs to stay with them, but who knows? Next came G3 absolutley amazing La grange, Voodoo Child, Little Wing and I'm going down... awsome, perfect, wonderful!.... ok and now the part that is going to make alot of people hate/envy... me! I won aftershow passes!.. about 30 people were inline waiting to go backstage and i thought how could all these people have passes... well once the security guards went through the line there were about hmm id say 10-15 people left.. we went back into this little meet and greet/party room where at first Satch greeted everyone at the door so i shook his hand and said awsome show this and that, and went in the room hoping he would soon follow, well after getting in i am so excited that i am shaking and look around shake Billy's hand, Mike Keneally's hand and others... which i was very pleased about but then i go to get a couple signatures and a picture with Satch and hes gone... everyone in the room is looking for him but he had gone to the private area, and i really thought he had left... so i went and got a signature from Vai got a picture and was quite happy and then i tell my brother that i want to stay until Satch comes back .... and everyone in the room is asking around trying to find him and then i see him hes just coming out of the private room so i am really hoping he is coming back to the meet/greet room which he does thankfully! and i ask him to sign some cd covers and then get a nice photo.... man what a night!!!! absolutley amazing! wow ive typed alot, my ears are still ringing from the concert and i am absolutley dog tired so please excuse my poor grammar/spelling! Thanks so much Petrucci,Vai and Satch for the most amazing night of my life! ---Addition--- Hey also a question for anyone who knows, does anyone know who was playing under the main tabernacle floor, i went down there after the show to use the restroom and ended up watching this acoustic guitarist that had an acoustic with i believe it was 3 necks... he was extremely talented! Please if anyone knows please post it here and email me @ jasonfritts@mediaone.net thanks in advance!!
