this was a G3 show with John Petrucci and Steve Vai. At this show Joe played his guitar with his teeth during his voodoo child solo. it was really great.

the show was awsome,i came for vai and satch, but JP was pretty good, but this was the first g3 for me,i waited a long time for this show to come by me the N.Y. crowd welcomed its (homeboys) with most people on thier feet, throughout most of the show,i saw young and older like myself(40)enjoying the best guitar players in the world, and for those who don't get it,they'll never know the places these guys can take you,it's like another world, when you get into this stuff/(addictive)it feeds youre soul, and i try to preach the sounds of satch and vai whenever i can, this concert is the first of many and would gladly pay 200 dollars to be up front next time although,18th row center was a great seat anyway,i also put in more hours myself practicing about 2hrs 6 days a week i can see myself improving more and more and you guys(satch and vai)are my incentive, i'm sure you are for many others out there!

Hey, I was at this show. Hey wait a minute, I was actually on the stage at one point. Hey wait another minute, I'm Steve Vai. Reading all of your comments on these shows is inspiring. I feel the same way, for me this tour was the best. Being along side such tremendous musicians is a life experience. Besides all the comments on the great musicianship, one thing that I am qualified to talk about is the goodness of these people as human beings. There was a lot of love and comaradery on that G3 tour and the memory of it will be our treasure. Besides getting up there every night and playing so brilliantly, John Petrucci is a very warm hearted guy and It was nice for us to get a chance to bond as friends. I hope I get to tour with him again. As for Joe, all of your idol worship is well placed. He is truly a giant among men. I know this from having a 30 year relationship with him. He has something that you can't practice to acquire and that's an inborn innate sense of emotional melody, complete mastery and control of his instrument and the ability and drive to make it real in the world. He expresses truth on the instrument and that's something you have to be born with and can not get from practicing. And he whips up a mean plate of pasta if your willing to do the dishes.
I hope that in the future, the stars line up so that another G3 tour is possible.
I think for me though, the best thing on the tour was you. It's no secret how difficult it is for instrumental artists these days to make records and sell tickets and night after night I would look out into the crowd, not feeling quite worthy of the good fortune, and see you all with lights in your eyes. You have all made it possible for this tour to happen and I believe I speak on behalf of all the G's when I say thank you from the bottom of our G-string!
Warm Regards
Steve Vai

Hello all, first off I must say that it was great to see Joe and Steve on the same stage again. (How I look forward to that), I was visiting in New York last month (July 11 – August 10) and I was lucky enough to catch the G3 show on July 13, 2001. At the Beacon Theater and let me tell you it was F*cking great, by the way, I took my Mom to the show (Her first Rock and Roll show), and she loved it. Stave was great and John kicks some ass that night, but Joe, he stole the show. Thanks again for a great night! All the best - Eddie

I was at the Friday night show at the Beacon and have to admit, this was the most inspiring show I've ever been to. This was my introduction to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai and haven't been the same since. Steve Vai's song he dedicated to his mom was incredible, the feeling he put into playing was as if he were talking to her. We were in the front row and listening to that was an experience like no other. We were both moved beyond belief by the music. I am also trying to find out the name of the song. I just bought the 7th song CD and am in the process of trying to find it on there. Any help in the name would be great.

Amazing Show. Petrucci really sounded great. I think he had the best sounding guitar out of all of them. Vai is a true genious and wizard. Vai played a song there that he dedicated to his mother. That was an amazing song..my favorite of the entire night from all of the performers. I have never heard it before and was wondering what it is called and if I can find it on CD somewhere. I have all of Steve's releases except the 7th song albulm. Is it on there possibly ? Does anybody know ???? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Joe was solid and great as always. I would recommend anyone see this show whether you know about the performers or not. It is really just great music and can be enjoyed by anyone !

This was my first G3 concert. It was Great! The Drums could have been mic'd better and I thought Stu's bass was a bit muffeld but what a night for Guitar. John Petrucci seemed to fit right in with Joe and Steve. Steve puts on a great show and Joe? He is the BEST. Coming out togather to ZZTOP was real good, The best version I haave ever heard of "Le Grange." What a fun night.

G3 NYC night one, without being too gushing, was awe-inspiring! I'm going to apologize in advance for the length, but so much detail and so little space.... John Petrucci kicked out the jams; didn’t know enough of his stuff to be able to name tunes here, but sat with one of his students (whose tickets I upgraded to 2nd row--read on for details) who seemed to think the song selection was solid--alright, I'm sold...I'll be buying some of his work. The one song I can name here was "Lost Without You"—a lovesong to Mrs. P, with the appropriate Petruccian tangents (read: the crazy but relevant-to-the-song-style soloing). John warned the crowd that "Steve Vai is about to come out and rip your head off", which was definitely truth in advertising—how good do you have to be to have Mike Keneally on *2nd* guitar, I repeat, SECOND guitar, doubling huge amounts of your parts?!? Cripes! Vai set had some old and some new, quite shredful on Jiboom (SRV at 78 rpm if you will), he’s also found a new use for his tongue—harmonics! Satch opened up ON FRICKING FIRE and stayed there all night; surprised quite a few by putting Satch Boogie early into the mix (always a crowd pleaser!) and was the picture of perfection on Always with Me/You, Cool#9, Rasberry Jam Delta, Extremist, Surfing, Flying and everything else he played—nary a missed beat, riff, note, divebomb, wail, whatever. I still wonder how Joe pulls off his stuff so completely clean even in live settings, but I have to say that his skills were representative of the total level of musicianship on this tour. It is as high as it’s ever been----Petrucci’s band featured Dream Theatre’s drummer and Dixie Dregs bassist (as comfortable playing shred-type leads as funky slap), Vai’s troupe with Mike K, Billy Sheehan (just beyond words--he was doing some kind of funky "patty cake" thing with Vai that simply can't be explained) and (insert drummer’s and 3rd guitarist's names here—sorry boys, it’s 1am and I can’t hear anything…but you both rock!); Joe’s posse with Stu "don’t call me canned" Hamm and Jeff Campitelli (I think—again, sorry drummer dude!). Of course, the piece de resistance, the "all star" jam, was in-f-ing-credible! La Grange (yeah, the ZZ Top tune--I don't think anyone knew it could be like this!), Voodoo Chile and Little Wing (Jimi would’ve been quite impressed) and Down Down Down (which seems to be a mainstay of the various G3 tours, rocks every time). It was almost like G5---both Billy and Stu were onstage, too (Mike used one of his infamous magic hats on he and the Dixie Dregs guy, though, as neither was anywhere to be seen). Show would’ve ranked a 10, but for 2 things….1: I can’t hear anymore (more tone, less volume would be greatly appreciated—the good stuff got drowned out every so often) and 2: I did the samaritanly thing and gave away 2 2nd row seats to a young fan and his dad, as some friends I bought tickets for (from an agent, mucho deniero) couldn’t show, and everybody and their brother kept sneaking up front and blocking our view! Turns out the kid has actually taken lessons from John Petrucci and had backstage passes, so if I ever hear from them again I might have one of my original ticket stubs autographed, but still…TAKE THE SEAT YOU PAY FOR AND LET EVERYONE GET THE VALUE OF THEIRS. Show overall was the best of all the G3's I've seen (which is all there've been), I got to do something pretty cool (I thought) for a total stranger and (most importantly), I got to use a lot of parenthesis on this note (ahh, there's my quota). Best show yet.
UPDATE: I did actually hear back from the kid's father the very next morning, who is fedexing both untorn ticket stubs, signed by all 3--what a cool return favor.

Joe, Thanx for playing a few riffs of my suggested jam song(Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll"). I enjoyed every note. Your set was spectacular! Great song selection and I must say that the backdrop & the lighting effects were the best you've ever had. Thanx again for another great performance. By the way, if you get a chance, tell Steve I was moved by his performance of "For the Love of God". He really is the passion & the warfare. You taught him well. Keep on keepin' on! C-Ya Soon. Gaxx

Very quick thoughts on Friday's Beacon Show Petrucci is a great mechanic whereas Joe and Steve are MUSICians, ARTISTS. His tone was so-so which was odd cause he usually gets those boogies to sound great. I'm not really a fan of boogies, save for maybe the occasional recitifer. Vai is very exciting and theatrical onstage, but plays WAY too loud. It's absurd! I had 3rd row seats but opted to watch him from the back of the room so I could make out what he was playing and even so it was deafening. Jesus, he plays L O U D. When I met him (Vai) after the saturday show, I really wanted to ask him "Why do you play so loud?" Satch is the man.

Wow, what a show. Despite the fact that we missed ALL of Petrucci's set due to extraordinary amounts of traffic, it was still a fantastic show. I had seen the first incarnation of G3 back in 96' in PA with Eric Johnson, I think this show rivaled that one. We had taken our seats as Steve had begun to play "Whispering a Prayer" which I must say is a beautiful song. Then he proceeded to tear it up with Billy Sheehan at hand, and the drum solo during..I think it was "The Animal"....yikes...I'm no drummer, but it sure did make we want to practice!! He finished it off with an amazing "For the Love of God", and by that point he had just killed it...absolutely destroyed the Beacon...AND Joe had yet to play a note. Joe came on and basically shortend the set list he had for the Live in San Fransisco disc..but it was nontheless breathtaking. Every song was played with unparalleled prowess and feeling, with favorites such as "Satch Boogie" and "Summer Song" tearing down the walls. As for the jam..what can I say..simply amazing. I had FINALLY heard JP play..and I was not disappointed one bit. He is making a slew of new fans on this G3 tour. All 3 (or 5, if you count Stu and Billy) put on one hell of a show. However the best part of the evening was still to come. We waited outside of the Beacon with a few other fans eagerly awaiting their departure. Stu came out, signed some autographs, as did Petrucci and Portnoy. Finally Vai came out and was mobbed, but politely asked to be given some room, and he took care of everyone like a true gentleman. He was quite softspoken but was nice and courteous to all, signing countless autographs and speaking with fans. He proceded to hang out while he waited for his car (a Ford Explorer) to arrive. It was nice to see not everybody is a fame hungry rock star. I was able to get Steve and Stu's autograph, so it was a great time for sure. Can't wait to do it again sometime soon...when this show comes to your town..DO NOT MISS IT!!!

Gig was actually for the 14th show @ Beacon theatre but this website wouldn't let me enter it in @ 2:56 am in the morning.
Joe Satriani was amazing. I seen him in two concerts before and this one was the best. His sound was beautiful and perfect. That was the best version of Always with me always with you I've heard him play and this was the best version I've heard. Your songs you played were all great and nicely modified and they were all actually favorites of mine from all the songs you have. Excellent selection of songs for this tour. When Joe's in town I always run to see him and this feeling was magnified greatly by all the players. Once I showed up with mom and my wrist in a cast to the Roxy to see him perform songs from Crystal Planet Like your my World- Beautiful song- should of been in G3. He's was fantastic and the epitome of cool. My only criticism was that the intro you did in Hammerstein ball room for creative Engine was the coolest intro I've ever seen Joe do. He just walked in with the lights red and had this smile on his face and the coolest walk. He didn't have to speak for people to know how cool he was. That intro was very cool as if he were saying you asked for me and now you got me and I'm going to give you a show to remember. Happy Birthday Joe Satriani- I am originally from L.I. (Glen Cove- 15 min. from Carle Place and someday hope to meet you and get to shake your hand and tell that your one of my biggest inspirations and I'll always know that it's about the music and not just how fast you can play!

WHAT CAN I SAY, ONLY THAT WHAT AWE-INSPIRING GUITAR WORK I'VE SEEN TONIGHT. IT WAS MY 1ST TIME SEEING JOHN P, HE WAS GREAT CONSIDERING MOST OF THE SONGS WERE JUST WRITTEN FOR THE TOUR.( WHICH IS AMAZING ) STEVE VAI, WELL LETS JUST SAY THAT HIS PLAYING COMES FROM ANOTHER REALM OR SOMETHING. HE IS TRULY A GUITAR WIZARD AND BILLY SHEEHAN JUST COMPLETLY BLEW ME AWAY. SEEING THEM TOGETHER AGAIN WAS BEAUTIFUL EVEN THOUGH THEY COULD'VE TURNED DOWN HIS BASS A LITTLE BIT. AND AS USUAL, JOE IS A BIG INSPIRATION TO ME AND MAN DID HE SHRED. I KNOW HOW OTHERS HAVE SAID THAT THERE WASEN,T ENOUGH JOE, MAYBE SO CONSIDERING HE USUALLY HAS THE 2 HR PLUS SHOW. BUT FOR WHAT IT WAS WORTH, HE WAS TRULY AMAZING! AND AS FOR THE JAM, OH MY GOD!!! TO SEE SUCH TALENT ON THE SAME STAGE AT THE SAME TIME WAS INCREDIBLE! IT'S SOMETHING I'LL NEVER FORGET. THANKS GUYS FOR AN INCREDIBLE NIGHT!

Frank Zappa once said, "My guitar wants to kill your mama!" and his guitar playing nearly killed mine. These guys in G3 want to take you out of your house, teleport you to the show, play some riffacious & riffreshing music and leave you spent. This was their "hometown" show. It was a night of completely indulgent guitar music and I loved it! John Petrucci opened the show and although I was not familiar with any of his material I enjoyed his playing. Steve Vai came out and ripped our heads off as John Petrucci promised he would.
He is truly the ROCK GUITAR GOD. With a fan blowing his hair off his face he looked like a spirit from the heavens. He dedicated a beautiful and heartfelt song to his mother and really put a lot of emotion into it. He doesn't just play the guitar with his fingers but puts his whole body into it. He and Billy Sheehan had a lot of fun playing "Go For It." You could see the delight in their faces as they tried to outdo one another. Steve closed his set with "For the Love of God." It was truly smoking. I read in a guitar magazine that before he did that song in the studio he fasted for three days. He put so much feeling into that song last night you would think he fasted for a week. Joe Satriani came out and showed why he headlined this tour. He has the personality and rapport with the audience that every performer should strive for. He played a great "Summer Song". Excellent use of his wah-wah on that tune. I really loved "Flying in a Blue Dream." It's also a great album so if you guys don't have it you should pick up a copy. His "Raspberry Jam" took the crowd somewhere into outer space. The encores were all classic rock tunes that you know and love. They were just another reason to riff away but it was certainly a treat to see Billy Sheehan sing "La Grange" and Steve to sing "Little Wing." The last tune was "I'm Going Down." I know the song from an old Jeff Beck Group album(I'm showing my age here) but I don't know who did it originally. Joe sung that one and John Petrucci really got a chance to shine. Go and see this show when it comes to your town and make sure you bring some ear plugs.
