I went to this show and saw g3 for the first time, ever!! I've been listening to these guys for years and had my opportunity to see them and took it! I was not disappointed...Yngwie was a bit off, but i'll let it slide...(lol) I look forward to every future show I can get to...how about eddie van halen with you two for next year? (!)(2004)..,Also, I'm a big fan of Yngwie..If I sound like I'm bashing him, I'm not...I think he's one of the greatest guitarists I've ever heard...FULL STEAM AHEAD!!!

Thankyou,

PT Grasso, Worcester, Mass. (midnightcat88@aol.com) P.s. You really need to come up with some good t-shirts.....the stuff(GRAPHICS) on these t's are really terrible..how about something along the lines of lots of good color and better (much better) design???

I thought the show was great. I have looked at alot of reviews and alot seem to bash Yngwie alot. I havent seen Yngwie before and i thought it was great. Of course, i thought steve and joe were awesome too but i think Yngwie was much better than eric johnson or petrucci or anyone else. He music is insane and if you dont like you dont have to bash him. These guys are all great and i thought the show was fantastic. I hope the next one is just as good.

I tend to agree with what I've heard other people say about the latest incarnation of G3... Joe and Steve were great as usual, but the giant ego (and subpar playing) of a certain third guitarist at the show was really distracting. Someone should tell him that it doesn't matter how fast you play if it's not clean and not in rhythm. It was amusing for the first 10 minutes or so, but it got old real fast. I had a good time, but I'd really like Petrucci and Portnoy for the next one. Or better yet, G2 + Liquid Tension Experiment. Or a Satch/Vai/Holdsworth G3. Or a Satch/Vai/Wayne Krantz G3. Or a Satch/Vai/Scott Henderson G3.

Joe, if you haven't heard Wayne Krantz yet... Dude. Go see him at the 55 Bar in NYC if you can or order one of his albums ("2 Drink Minimum" is my fave). He's *nuts* - One of the most rhythmically happening guitarists I've ever heard. http://www.waynekrantz.com

Very good show. Turn down the volume please, everyone does their music an imjustice when they crank it so it is just noise. PLEASE get Eric Johnson back, he made you guys slow down and feel the music instead of HACKING the crap out of Hendrix. Yngwie dont sing and dont play hendrix. Vai is the MAN but turn the volume down and play TENDER SURRENDER. Satch, great performance, THank you.

Thanks Guys! I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. What an inspiration! I went with my cousin, both of us said it was like nothing else we have ever seen. I love Joe's music, so diverse and melodic! Steve was unbelievable, what stage presence. Yngwie really worked the audience. Come back to Boston soon!

Hey Joe, great job on the show. I had a blast!!!!!!!!! The performance's were great on all of the guitarists parts. This was my first time seeing Yngwie, I thought it was entertaining, I admit some his performance was alittle too much at times, however I still enjoyed it, he is one of my favorites. Steve Vai had a very touching performance when he dedicated the song to his wife. And I also thought his three neck guitar part was awesome, not something you see all the time. Satch, as always fantastic job, you are my favorite and inspiration for persuing guitar as a career. Over all, I was alittle bummed that there weren't as many songs during the jam, when I first saw G3 in 96 with Kenny Wayne Sheppard, they had alot more songs during the jam, however when Voodoo Chile broke out I was going nuts. After the show I met Steve Vai for the first time, very nice man, tired too so he wasn't around for long, but great guy...true human being. I wish I got a chance to stop Yngwie after the show, but he seemed beyond tired and wanted to just get away so I didn't bother. I was alittle bummed that Joe wasn't around after the show, I was hoping he could sign my copy of his 1984 release, next time I will buy a jacket and get a backstage pass. Joe, hope you play some solo shows sometime soon, I wil be there front row!!!!!!!!!!

It was a good performance. I was thrilled to be able to see 3 of my 4 favorite guitarists perform live! However there was one major thing that detracted from all of the performances that's important to point out- the ridiculous excess of volume. I love loud music, but when things are cranked up to that extreme in such a small venue, music turns into noise. Half the time I could barely discern the tune not to mention by the end of the night I had a terrific headache. It's my opinion (and I know I'm not alone on this) that rock shows tend to overdo the volume to an extent where it takes away from the music, and sadly, this show was no exception. I saw a lot of people walk out that night early on and I'd bet that was the reason for more than half of those people leaving. I don't know who or whom makes the decisions on setting the volume, but their decisions are turning brilliant guitar work into blaring noise. Why must they always do that at shows? But most of all, why at the G3 shows? I'm sure it's one Joe's goals to be the loudest, noisiest player out there. It's probably too much to hope for that my small voice out of thousands of fans can make a difference, but nonetheless I implore whomever is in charge of this technical aspect, to be more reasonable. Joe's not only a brilliant guitarist but also a great performer and it's a shame for technical problems like that to dampen the experience for the fans.

I'll admit I was pretty disappointed with this one. I read all the reviews about Yngwie and didn't really care too much about them. I figured he'd still be fun to watch and his antics would be worth it. Of course, he came out and proved me wrong. Yngwie is like a clown in the circus...I view him as a spectacle, not a guitarist. Jimi Hendrix and the blues legends of past were rolling in their graves when Yngwie hacked out off-tempo wanking versions of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child." Apparently, someone forgot to tell him that the blues is based more on feeling, not how fast you can play. I knew I was in for a night of egotistical, masturbatory solos when his band became cloaked in dense fog. Oh well, at least his drummer was cool.

I never like watching Steve Vai play. I've seen him three times and he's never done anything really cool. Don't get me wrong, he's a ridiculous guitar player and the stuff on his albums is brilliant, but he never plays anything that really grooves live anymore. When ALS came out, he was playing stuff like "Kill the Guy with the Ball" and "Bad Horsie." I would pay good money to see those. These days though, it's all the "emotional" ballads. I also can't stand how every songs ends in some "let's play with feedback" way. End the f-ing song! Cut the extra ten minutes of feedback and add some great tunes.

I'm not sure what type of amps Satch is playing through these days, but his tone was unbelievable...I've seen him 6 times now and this is the best he's ever sounded. Satch's set made the show worthwhile. "Starry Night" was the antithesis of everything Yngwie and Vai had wanked out...Just a great song with a heartfelt blues solo. This was also the first time I saw him really nail "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing." Great set.

The end jam was bastardized by Yngwie J. Clownsteen. Plain and simple. Who does off-tempo neoclassical shredding over "Little Wing?" What a joke. To be fair though, all three G's needed to slow down a bit. It got to a point where so many notes were being played, it sounded like a single tone. This is on blues songs, mind you.

Before this show, I never understood why instrumental guitar records (especially Joe's) weren't very popular. Now I do. Except for Satch, no one played any songs. They were all long solos conveying only one feeling: HEY, LOOK AT ME! If I'm a guitar player and I feel this way, I can only imagine how others feel.

JOE: Great job man. I'm really looking forward to seeing you on the next solo tour.

Great show! I would have rated it a 10 except for the fact that Stu Hamm was not there and Billy didn't play during the G3 jam. Oh, well, I guess it's time for a B3 Tour. Yngwie was outstanding in my opinion. I have always wanted to see him perform live. Vai was amazing, but I would expect no less from a man of his caliber. Satriani was way too predictable. He needs a new setlist.

Awesome show. Had great seats - on edge of balcony, could see everything perfect. Highly recomend those seats for the orpheum. Reading all the other posts about YJM, ( the reviews on Vai's page were alot harsher towards Malmsteen )- I'll say that he was definitely entertaining. Say what you want about his style and all the goofyness- he can play that instrument like no other. Wicked fast. But most of the time my brother and I were just laughing enjoying his antics. Steve was very good. It seems he's definitely found his nitch. Very comfortable, confident, and his stagemanship is unmatched. Didnt think I would like the opening 3 neck guitar part I heard about. But it turned out to be the best part of his performance. Joe was great also but wish he played some songs for his die-hard fans. Other than his normal hits. But he sounded really good, and he brought a nice element to the show - a straight up normal guy whos a good guitar player. The other 2 guys I was with, who are not as into this stuff as i am, both thought Joe was the best. I am a huge Vai fan so I think I enjoyed his set the most, but I would never miss a Satriani concert. He's the best guitar songwriter ever. The g3 jam was good but YJM seemed a little over the top. But Joe and Steve seemed right in groove together. (which sounds about right considering they've been jamming together for like 20 yrs or something) All and all good all around g3 show- YMJ- the fastest Steve - best stagemanship Joe - best songwriter Someone in a las vegas review on Vai's site made mention of Eddie Van Halen being a good candidate for a g3 tour. That would definitley be the ultimate G3 show. If egos could be put aside (on the part of Eddie, I'm sure) that would be the best. Something tells me that is never going to happen, but what the hell - I figured I'd put it out there. Looking forward to the new studio albums... Come back to Boston quick!

Pretty good show. The sound WAS really muddy, especially for the jam. When the three Gs soloed at the same time it was impossible to differentiate who was playing what, much less hear it with any clarity one might be accustomed to.

We got there a little early, and to our surprise we had awesome seats. 13 rows back, pretty much center. Yngwie came on stage and played one 45 minute long song and a cool little acoustic solo (I liked that). I'm no fan of Yngwie, and all I really wanted to hear him play was Black Star, and he did; for about thirty seconds before going off on some shred tangent. I was happy when he left the stage.

Vai came on next with his triple neck Evo and blew the crowd away. The first song he played was great (does ANYONE know what song that was?), and he had a great stage presence. He interacted with the crowd a lot and he had the legendary TONY MCALPINE on keyboards/guitar with him which was excellent. Whispering A Prayer was definitely the best song he played, and he dedicated it to his wife. A definite solid performance by Vai!

Now, the moment I'd been waiting for since the tickets had been ordered almost two months ago: Satch. He started off with Satch Boogie, it was awesome. He played all of the classics, really.. Crystal Planet, Summer Song, Starry Night (great song!), Mystical Mr. Potato Head Groove thing, etc.. Wish he would have had a MUCH longer set as the G3 Jam wasn't that great. It seemed like Yngwie was trying to steal the show, and the sound was unfortunately very muddy. I liked Steve and Joe's picks for the jam though, Rockin in a Free World really got the crowd going.

Overall, great show!

Amazing. The greatest thing I have ever seen. I had only heard Vai's for the Love of God and most of Yngwie's stuff, but none of Joe's. Yngwie came out and it was soo cool. The king of shred and a pretty good composer, I thought he was pretty good. He started off with Evil Eye, and the part towards the end where he goes up and down the arpeggios, there is a mistake on that on the album the last time he plays it that really annoys me everytime I hear it, and I was relieved he didn't make it again. I had never seen those kinds of stage tricks, live throwing his guitar around, or the way he would play and pull out his hand and play with his arm over the neck - those were unbelievable. The way he made his guitar sound like an ochrestra was amazing, as well as his feedback thing. The guy in front of me, who was wicked cool, told me that Yngwie had disconnected the middle pickup and reversed the polarity of the other two, making them sound an octave higher than they were...unbelievable. He also played Far Beyond the Sun, Part of Icarus's Dream Suite, some of Black Star, and a few others I didn't recognize. Then came Vai. He walked out on stage alone without a guitar and the crowd raised a huge uproar. Then he sat down with his triple neck guitar and played something extrodinary. I really liked the song he dedicated to his wife - Whispering a Silent Prayer I think it was called? He would blow on his guitar and he would summon feedback harmonics, it looked like. He played a few other songs and demonstrated how amazing his technique was while playing melodically. His preformance of For the Love of God was magnificent. The only problem was that he took too long to end it, in that he would do a run and finish it with ridiculously high feedback, and then do another one, and he did this over and over for like 5 minutes. Still, he was great and I have to buy some of his albums. Billy Sheehan was also awesome. Satriani came on and he was great. I didn't recognize any of the songs except for part of one that my friend plays. Very melodic player. I thought he was great, and I don't know what to get of his. When they all came on stage it was really cool to see them all lined up and soloing off one another, and it really looked like they all were really enjoying it. It seemed like everyone was taking an extremely long time to play everything, which was good. Now the only problems with the show: I began to get really tired around the time that Joe came on, I was sitting off to the left pretty close to the speakers, a little overboard with the bass, and Yngwie's bassist's solo, which sounded terrible with all of the distortion. I was a little dissapointed not to get my Rising Force album signed, or anything for that matter, but it was still the best time ever.

Overall a good show last night. The sound was not the best - it seemed like all the guitarists were too quiet their first couple songs, then by the middle of their sets they were better in the mix. And vocals? Well supposedly they were there! Hey it may not be V3 but crank those things up! And Joe's harmonica suffered the same fate. It was my first time seeing Yngwie, and having taken guitar lessons with Joe Stump I knew what to expect. Dazzling technique and lots of flash. Fun to watch, although the first time I could tell he switched songs was when he started playing Red House, but that's probably just my own ignorance. Good showmanship, but I think about 3 to 5 people probably got about 24 picks each. Steve walked out onstage next (literally, that was weird!) He started with that very cool triple-neck geetar song. I was glad to see Juice since I've never seen that one live. And as I predicted, For the Love of God. More dazzling technique, the best part was the trading between the gutiarists and billy. Then our buddy Joe's set, which, as usual, was the best of them all. No songs I haven't seen before but they had a good energy and I enjoyed myself. This is my 5th time seeing Joe I think. The jam was cool, it was very nice of Steve and Joe to teach Yngwie how to play with other guitarists while they were onstage, that was very charitable. They were all obviously enjoying themselves, as was the audience. I personally didn't think this one measured up to the John Petrucci G3 that I saw, but it was an entertaining show. Tried to stick around afterwords and meet the guys but Joe went out another exit (d'oh!) and Steve was having none of that with our poor little group of fans who had waited an hour and a half in the cold. Well at least i got to say hi to Mike Manning and my unlist shirt was not worn in vain! Can't wait for the next all-joe tour and maybe I'll have more success in talking to you again after the next show, joe! Rock on.

That was AWESOME!!!! All three were truely amazing. Yngwie, although I had low expectations for him, knew how to put on a show. I loved how he made his guitar sound like an entire orchestra, WOW!!! He really put his guitar through hell. Steve, I thought, was the BEST of all of them (sorry Joe). I've always loved Steve and to finally see him live in concert, it was like a dream come true. He is an outstanding guitarist. I loved how he played an entire song just using his echo and triple neck, and his story and dedication of "Whispering a Prayer" to his wife. Joe was great too, mostly because I recognized his songs more than Yngwie's and Steve's. I'm glad he played "Midnight", I've loved playing that and I'm glad I could see him play it. The G3 Jam was the greatest thing I have ever seen. Although, I didn't really like Yngwie singing "Voodoo Chile" the guitars were awesome. And Vai's selection was perfect. Hendrix's "Little Wing." That was simply outstanding, and a very fitting tribute. Joe's was very easily the best of all the Jam's. He chose Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." EVERYONE got into that. The audience was singing. They even got all the other bands all around one mic to sing it. But what was up with Yngwie at the end of that song. Did he think that just because he didn't get another solo, that he can just stop playing? He just stood there lifting his guitar up and down by the strap, it was really pathetic. BUT WHAT A SHOW!!! Can't wait for the next G3. Keep going to the Orpheum, the small size makes it perfect for everyone to see. See if you can talk Eric into doing G3 again and if he won't do it, see if John Petrucci will do it again. If those two can't, or won't do it, then I wouldn't mind seeing Yngwie again.

The 3.5hr drive back to Vermont through the rain and fog was certainly worth it. Still digesting the show and slowly getting my hearing back. I had developed expectations based on the posted feedback throughout the tour. I enjoyed Yngwie's performance despite the volume of negative feedback and despite the fact that I went back to my old Yngwie CD's from the 80's after buying my G3 tickets and couldn't even listen to a CD in its entirety. The music does not move me the way it used to when I was younger. But combined with the visual aspect of his performance it certainly did entertain me, I must admit, and I was amazed at how easy he made it look (especially with all that clunky jewelry). I did feel sorry for his tech and hope he was well paid (yeah, right). Steve was wonderfully personable on stage. The dedication to his wife was so heartfelt and moving, especially in the context of myself having recently been married and having a daughter. He is truly a credit not only to the world of music but to intelligent, feeling life everywhere. And his subsequent performance of A Whisper and a Prayer with such life-loving passion was added demonstration of that point (in case there was any question). Just wish, like many, he could have played longer!! I liked the all-star line-up but had difficulty with Sheehan's tone. Joe....after all these years of loving and learning his music, I never until last night, went to see him live. And it was completely awesome. I was perfectly happy with the 'greatest hits' setlist, given the time constraints. His tone was warm, solid, round and the mix was great though I wish I could have heard Jeff's great drumming with more clarity. Nice version of "Midnight," a song I learned a number of years back but haven't played in years (my studio became my daughter's room). And the jam after "Always..." was a really tasty treat. As for the final jam with all three guitarists...I had developed expectations based on the first G3 CD with EJ, which I played at high volumes in my car on the way to work for the past couple months. While the jam last night was so visually spectacular, rivoting and exciting, the incredible wall of undifferentiated sound was a bit too much for me. Yngwie to his credit seemed to be checking in with Joe and Steve for cues as to whether it was his turn to solo. Vocals?!?! Could barely discern a word. And it seemed that Jeff, Galen and Matt were mere shadows, chatting and joking amongst themselves in the background, disconnected from the rest of the show (perhaps by design, to place focus on the G3's?). Hopefully the forthcoming CD/DVD will have more clarity and I will be able to hear what I missed. But overall I loved the show and am grateful to all three of these great guitarists and their bands for sharing their talent and skill, honed by years of dedicated effort. Next G3 with Steve Morse!!!

The show would be a 10 if it weren't for the sound. The PA must've sucked because each set sounded a bit muddy, although I'm sure my seats didn't help much (too right *sigh). In any case, on with the review!

Malmstein: Honestly, I'm not a Malmstein fan, but his set was incredible. Heavier than expected, and really thick. It sucks that the vocals didn't cut through at all, the bass could've been brought down a bit, and his guitar sounded... well, you know Malmstein.. who cares, look what he can do! Important things to note: 1. The keyboardist played an awesome solo, definitely worth mentioning, and 2. Is Malmstein actually Meatloaf?

Satriani: Owing to a sound that may be too distinct, his sets are the same as always. High quality, good songs, lively, and 'fun.' He played the classics (of course) and some newer songs as well. Important things to note: 1. No Stu Hamm (but Bissonet's just fine ;) ), and 2. Satch's hat/sunglasses combo reminded me of the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz.

Vai: There are no words to describe his set.

So, in summary: Malmstein: Meatloaf, Satriani: Scarecrow, Vai: Speechless

Yngwei was yngwei ...shred shred shred..Its amazing but i got bored realli fast..hes amazing thoguh..the acoustic thing was realli cool. but he shreds to much for me..hes 100% shred.. even 99% shred and 1% melody who be better for me but what else can you expect from yngwei.thats kinda the sad part he wouldnt be able to groove to blues tune. his jimi cover i thought sounded horrible. I dont think his guitar tone is meant for anything else except shred..but hey hes yngwei amazing shredder,

VAI VAI VAI stole the SHOW. hes the most amazing GUITARIST.. He shreds shreds as fast as yngwei, yet he so melodic and very innovative.. There s no gutarist in the world that has his style. Hes the most innovative guitarist and plays some damn good music.. Somthing about his sound that so unique and special.. and he shreds like a monster ...with taste. fast lick fast sweeps just like YJM.. And can pour out melody into your hearts as h e didi lst night.. He also does thing with the guitar that JOE or YJM could never do.. like play witha tounge, triple neck, wierd noises, he makes the coolest and most wierd noses.. steve definetly changed my life last night.!1

Joe YOU are the most solid player.. Your never off your alwasys on.. You shred when the time is right and you play great melodies. Nothing i can say bad about satch hes a solid player.. satch was probably the most mellow of the three but he doesnt over due anything is what i like most about him..

Jam , yngwei was taken the glory from joe and steve but hey i guess thats YJM he wants to live out the 80's again.. but i guess thats why we love him..

Thank s tot he three G's

Joe you rock, steve you amaze, yjm you shred keep at it..

all i can possibly say is holy shit. I can barely find words to describe the show at the Orpheum.Yngwie is truely as steve calls him "a freak of nature". the speed and clarity in his arpeggios and his perfection of harmonic minor is barely fathomable. Steve fai with his triple neck guitar that he can play 2 necks of at the same time. The tightness of his band when they synchronize all guitarists to do the same solos at the same time. The playing of everybody elses guitar. Left me speachless. And of course Joe satriani with his freakishly amazing legato style. MPHGT IS AMAZING! Joe has everything youd get if you combined the speed and technical side of yngwie with the innovation and precision of Vai. All encompassingly you get the most impressive entity on an instrument ever, Joe Satriani. and oh yeah, they do the best version of rockin in the free world ive ever heard. Its amazingly heavy! and i love it. Absolutely a breath taking show , first time seeing any of them and i was blown away. One of the best nights of my life

WOW! What an amazing show by all three guitar players! When my friend and I were walking down the street a few hours before the show, we saw none other than Steve Vai! He was a really cool guy and signed my shirt. When we got to the show, the place was packed and you could feel the excitement in the air.

First, Yngwie was up. He played a lot of favorites and then did this crazy harmonizing violin sound w/ delay and the volume knob. Amazing and brilliant. I was happy when he started playing a Concerto Suite song. I didn't think he would do one of those songs live because it's not rock, but it's one of my favs by him. The only thing was, he couldn't play along with the recording if his life depended on it. O well. Of course there were the Yngwie antics of kicking picks and throwing his guitar. The medley was great too except I wish he played the songs for longer.

Next up, Mr. Vai. Let me say that this man gets better and better every single time i hear him play. He came out with the three neck guitar and rocked it like no other. He also chatted a little bit about some Berklee experiences. When Billy Sheehan, Tony MacAlpine, Dave Weiner, and Steve all started playing eachothers guitars, it was so awesome.

Last before the jam, Satch took the stage. He opened up with Satch Boogie and the sound was just explosive. From the first song, his tone and the band's sound was just way better than the other two. I loved the extended version of Always With Me, Always With You. Midnight was great. He made a bunch of pretty cool additions to that song. He also played The Extremist, Summer Song, Starry Night, Flying In A Blue Dream, and Mystical Potato Head. He put on the best straight up rock n roll show out of the 3.

The jam was absolutely awesome. Yngwie was a little bit of a ham on stage. I couldn't tell if he was just craving attention or if thats just the way that Yngwie always acts. Who cares. The man can still play a mean guitar. The three of them jammed on Voodoo Chile, LIttle Wing, and Keep On Rocking In The Free World. The three such diverse styles all on the same stage at the same time was kind of a treat for the ears. At the end of the night, I went home a very happy man! This was by far the most amazing experience of my life! I can't wait for the next one.
