I never got to see this show and i wanted to let it be known, if anyone cares for the less fortunate ones in life. I arrived in Washington DC. at the time after screaming and fighting with my girlfriend the whole way to the show. I drove around 4 hours to get there. When we finally get there my girlfriend decides she doesnt want to go anymore due to all the fighting that had ensued through the past 4 hours. I arrived IN DC right at the time the show started i remember that much. So i would have walked into the venue right when whoever played first started their set. I am the biggest Satch fan in the world and would have love to seen Yngwie's drunken ass. But I couldnt go because I ended up flipping out at the hotel and almost had the police called on me and so i decided to stay with my girlfriend who was highly upset at the time. Although in the back of my mind i wish i would have left and walked the three blocks to the show. But i just couldnt i guess thats what love does to you. Anyways we stayed at the hotel and got room service and tried to have an enjoyable time, i think we did the best we could from missing one hell of a show. Anyways i hope Joe or someone who cares reads this and maybe ill get to see joe next time. Joe you rock! so does guns n' roses! I wish everyone good luck in their concert adventures!

Great show...I think YJM tried to steal it and did a fair job of ruining a lot of the jam, but you were awesome!

Great show. Yngwie was a little over the top with the whole kick the pick thing, and his guitar-round-the-neck thing would have been cooler had he not done it so many times, but you can't detract from the guy's insane chops. Granted, they were a little monotonous, but still... What to say about Vai,.. Awesome set excellent band, but it was too short. Glad I finally got to see him do "For the Love of God", and "I'm the Hell Out of Here" was great with the band doing all the crazy riffs with hands on each other's guitars. Then of course, there was Satch. Need I say more? The only bummer was that he didn't play "Cool#9" and I was too far back to see his hands on "Midnight". Still, excellent set. "Starry Night" was beyond unreal, and "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" was killer as always. The jams seemed rushed, but towards the end of a tour, it's to be expected. Joe, next time you guys need to get DiMeola!!

Great show overall. Yngwie....I don't really care for his music. Too much going on sometimes it hardly seems like music, plus its really choppy. He definitley makes a presence on the stage too; maybe too much when your sharing with Satch and Vai. I give him a 5.
Vai...Excellent. Great showmanship, shared the stage with his band and even shared instruments with them. He sounded great but Billy Sheehan, who was good, needed to turn down his bass a little, but thats nit picking. Vai was great and he did'nt drag his songs out as long as before. I give him an 8.
Joe...Great. He does'nt get carriying on like Vai and Yngwie on the stage....but then he does'nt need to. Melodic, precisely executed, no ego, just let the music take over and stand back. Joe seemed tired tonight and not really into the show. Of course I was getting tired myself. He's still the best in my book. The music he played was so varied and so well put together...it all just comes together and made a great performance for him. I give Joe an 8 as well.
G3-rocking. I liked Joe and Vai...Yngwie...I appreciate his talent though I don't care for him.
I give this G3 a 7 overall, mainly because I won aftershow passes, but could'nt make the metro in time so I could'nt hang out. That really sucked. Damn. Damn. Damn.

Great evening! Granted, I wasn't as blown away as I was two years ago when I saw G3 with Petrucci, but this was definitely the place to be on Tuesday night in DC - Satch was even featured in Washington Post! First off, Yngwie. The works, of course - smoke billows onto the stage, lights go down, and his band enters to a flurry of notes that only one man can produce. As Yngwie jumped onto the stage, he immediately spun the guitar around his neck and threw a pick out to the crowd right before he caught it. It took him a song or two to warm up (he was a bit sloppy at the beginning). But after that, his playing was supreme. Granted, the spinning guitar/kicking picks lost its sting after he started doing it every two minutes, but how unbelievable a player is he? A lot of his set was solo guitar, where he played with his harmonizer, delay, and various other processors (sick). Standard Yngwie instrumental material, and various segments from Bach and such. He also did a killer version of Red House - his singing was incredibly bluesy. Vai's set was one thing most notably - short. Granted, his slower songs don't grab me as much as his faster ones, and I still don't recognize them by name. I guess his band was the sharpest of the three. I was surprised the confidence with which he approached Macalpine and gave him the, "What?!" look - quite a guitar duel. The four of them did some synchronized licks, split up riffs by two notes per person, fretted each others' notes, and all that stuff. Steve had some awesome solos, Billy had a great solo, drum solo was sweet. I was sort of disappointed because we were sitting very close to the front on the left side, and couldn't see Tony until he came out to do guitar. Ah well. Satriani's set was great, too. His music appeals to the hardcore musician and the general public alike, which is what makes him so great to see in concert. He played many fan favorites, including one of mine - Crystal Planet. He was actually more inventive song-wise, and improvised on many passages that he normally plays note-for-note. But... no Stu.... I really don't like Matt's playing, Satch would do well to find a better bassist. The encore was a lot of fun. People piled up to the front and no one could see sitting down anymore, so we all stood up. Yngwie was unbelievably drunk. I knew he would be, but I didn't realize he'd be THAT drunk. But his playing (when he actually played, and not ran around the stage) was par. His interaction with his sound guy was amusing as well... one time he stuck his guitar on top of a full stack with two heads - and the sound guy is 5'2" or so. No incidents though, which is always a good thing. Vai and Satch seemed to take a step back. Yngwie, though he played well, didn't seem to follow them very well. He'd do one of his signature riffs, then Vai would do something and Yngwie would be like "Yeah that's cool!" Then Satch would play something, and Yngwie would forget what Vai had played, so he just did another riff. He seemed on top of his game, though he figured a lot of things out on the fly. The drinking took a toll on his voice, so he didn't sing as well as he did in his set. Vai's voice was probably the best, but unfortunately his range isn't very impressive. Joe's singing seemed uninspired... I was surprised. But hey, who goes to see G3 for the singing, right? No Billy in the encore... I yelled for him, as did a few other people, but it didn't catch on. What an unspirited crowd we are. Overall, good show, great time. Next year: Greg Howe with Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers! (I can dream, right?)

I will start with Yingwie. He seemed to be in a very good mood. He has the fastest fingers of anyone that I have ever seen. There were 2 young boys (maybe 10 years old) and he made sure that each of them got a guitar pick. I was in the 3rd row, and was not able to get a pick because none of them made it past the 2nd row. He needs to work on his pick drop kick. I was a little dismayed when he started tearing the strings off of his guitar. I was praying that he was not going to do a Pete Townsend and smash his piece. I felt sorry for his guitar handler who had to catch his guitars, and restring the one in record speed. But overall I give Yingwie good marks.
Steve Vai is an anomally to nature. I could not believe my eyes when the house lights were up, the stage lights were up, and he just walked out, sat down, and started to play his triple guitar. Like welcome to my living room, I am going to play some music now. He was INCREDIBLE!! The music that he makes come out of a guitar is mind boggeling. Steve is extremely expressive with his music. And that night at the Warner Theater was no different. I was in the third row, and after one of his songs, I bowed to his Greatness. The Guitar Gods have blessed him tremendously, and I feel priveledged to have been able to attend and hear him play live.
What can you say about Joe Satriani. Amazing, fantastic, riveting. Words can not describe the way he plays, and the music that comes from his being. He played two of the most gorgeous guitars that I have ever seen. Ibanez must be a fantastic sponsor. He came out with his signature hat and sunglasses. I think the only time that he opens his eyes is when he has some particularly difficult finger work to perform. The rest of the time he has his head back, eyes closed and is just getting into the groove.
The jam session was very good. Yngwie got to show off some more! (I think that makes him very happy). More picks were thrown. There was a guy in the front row who must have gotten about nine of them. Finally the guy that I brought got one. I was happy for him. The Hendrix tunes were OK. I really liked when they all came together on Rockin In The Free World!!
Even sitting in the third row, I took my binoculars along. I don't like to miss anything that is going on. I got to get a good look at the guitars, the playing, and the rest of the instruments and guys playing them. KUDOS to the bands!! You know that when you have a heavy metal guitar master, you also need to have some awesome backup musicians. In all cases the back up bands were fantastic!
Thank you to all three of the Master Guitar Artists on this years G3 Concert. I look forward to attending another G3 in the future.

I agree with the last review about Yngwie's stage mannerisms. He should have stayed with the group instead of running off all the time. Yngwie rested on his laurels a bit. I thought he did a half-baked version of Far Beyond the Sun, sometimes duffing around instead of playing the licks. We guitar players want to see the licks we've come to know and love played live. This was my first Malmsteen show and I'm glad I saw him. But Joe and Steve played their material more solidly and completely. Question: Can someone please tell me what you 'get' for the $100 "Meet and Greet" experience, and does that differ from the backstage show passes given away here on the web site?

The show at the Warner was incredible . I took my 11 year old son to the show and we actually had front row seats . The show was amazing . All three guys were right on with the fret work and incredible . The bands were tight . Vai's band was super natural . WOW .. Jeff campitelli is the man . Remember to check out my website Jeff ( Us Italian drummers need to stick together ) . Highlight of the show ( Thank you Steve Vai ) . At the end of Vai's set when he was playing For the Love of God , he noticed my son in the front row and during his solo part , he walked over to where we were sitting , directed my son to come to stage's edge , and handed his guitar pick right to him . That made the whole night for me . ( Steve , if you read this , I know you remember this and will remember my son always as he got to meet you after the show , THANKS ) . We got backstage passes and everyone was really cool , especially my main man Jeff Campitelli ( Jeff , don't forget to check out www.molinarodrums.com ) . Thanks for getting me into the Keswick show the next night . Backstage was awesome meeting everyone and getting pictures . The only turn off for me was that I noticed there were a lot of parents there like me with early teenage children with me to meet the guys and Yngwie was well beyond toasted , way too much to drink . He's still living that rock n roll star lifestyle I can see . Check out my review for the next nights gig on Yngwie , you won't believe it , but it's true . It was so awesome , that I drove up to PA to see the next show and Jeff Campitelli got me in , thanks Jeff . You are so nice . Thanks for appreciating the efforts that your fans go to come and see you . I went backstage again that night and everyone signed the pictures that I took the night before in DC . What a great first concert this was for my son ... I wished it was longer . It seemed like Yngwie played longer then Joe and Steve . The ending jam blew away the entire DC area I bet .. WOW WOW WOW AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME SHOW .. Thanks , Eric Molinaro

Very good playing and good show altogether. Let's analyze the details... Yngwie Malmsteen - I loved the whole throw the guitar around your neck and keep playing thing...I loved it the first time...I liked it the second time...but it should have stopped there. This also applies to the kicking the picks and the throw the guitar to the techy. Vai - well what can I say, the man is a showman...awesome and the band was goddam tight. Satch - so Joe is Joe and he'll always be Joe - not Joe the showman, but Joe the musician. I have one complaint - he didn't play Secret Prayer. Overall the Jam was good except that Yngwie could not stand having the share a stage with anyone. Yngwie does have a half-decent voice though and did a great job on the hendrix songs though I would have liked for him to have emulated Hendrix's style on the fretboard as well as vocally. Vai and Satch were up there having fun as usual and even Yngwie seemed to have fun. Good show fellas!

The G3 Tour was definately what I expected it to be. Malmsteen, Vai and Satriani all seemed to have enjoyed themselves a lot. I dont know how they couldn't though. Yngwie opened the concert and played for about an hour or so, longer than Satriani or Vai. I don't really know what he played except for Black Star, but he didn't even play all of that. He did a lot of stuff without his band, which kind of sucked, but other than that, he had a good set, but it got a little boring due to the lack of creativity on his part because all he was doing was shredding, and after the first 20 minutes it started to get kind of old. Then Vai came out, and boy did he make an entrance. He was playing a triple necked guitar, Ibanez of course. He just sat right down, center stage and played away. It was almost like he was warming up. His set, in my opinion, was the best, by far due to the way that he expresses himself on stage. Also, his band was insanely energetic. I don't think I have ever seen a band with so much energy like they had. Vai just totally rocked the place, everyone was going wild. Vai did some really wicked stuff with his guitar as well, like screwing around with the whammy bar and playing with his DigiTech Whammy. Then, Satriani came out. He opened with Satch Boogie, which was really wicked. I was hoping he would play that song. He played, I think, 3 songs off of Strange Beautiful Music. I was kind of disappointed though because he didn't play Mind Storm, but hey, can't always get what ya want, right? Joe is just such an amazing guitarist, and during the show, i was just sitting there, in awe of his playing. ah, so wonderful. Then of course, all three guys came out for a jam, which was INSANE! They played Little Wing, Voodoo Child, and a Neil Young song, i forgot the title of it. The jam was probably the best part. I was disappointed in Yngwie though because he seemed to half ass everything. What i mean by that is before the songs were over, he would throw his guitar to his tech and go and get a drink, then he would come out, not play and just throw picks out into the crowd, which wasnt bad, but it just bothered me that he half assed everything like that. Joe and Steve seemed to be having a blast, Yngwie did too, but he probably thought everyone was cheering for him, due to his gigantic ego problem. Ah, he's still a damn good player though. But overall the concert was a blast! I definately didn't mind where i was sitting, 3rd row, center. Definately a good experience and looking forward to going to the next G3, if and when there is one.

Great show.. Joe and Steve rocked the house. Yngwie was over the top as everyone has said before, it was good to see him but his stage antics got old quick. It looked like he was trying to kick field goals with his picks. The funny thing was watching his stage hand we named "pick boy" running on and off the stage to refill Yngwie's pick tape on his mic stand. Yngwie does a good Elvis too with his pointing and shaking of his hands. Next G3 line up should be G2.. just Joe and Steve Followup to AquariusWB: As for paying attention to Yngwies sound, he blows his musical WAD in 5 minutes after that its a replay of this first 5 minutes an so on. You know its true.

amazing..amazing...first time ever i saw malmsteen and vai live..have seen satch with dream theater. I was overwhelmed when yngwie started off with "evil eye"...amazing version!...im not much of a fan of stage antics but those who only saw and were offended by them obviously couldn't hear what he was playing. he was amazing. vai was unbelievable...he is someone who makes his studio version seem worthless with his amazing LIVE versions...the reaper was a joy and so "stage worthy". the best sounding was by far Satriani. his sound was upfront and not buried in the bass but still comfortable and the execution...flawless!! For me, these guys represent the masters of their Genre' of guitar music; neoclassical , spiritual and bluesy melody rock for yngwie, vai and stach respectively. USA is unfortunately still not ready for neoclassical, as is evident by the above reviews and yngwie did seem out of place with vai and satch on the jam..but i would still go to a malmsteen concert WITH BELLS ON! i give it a 10 because i came from Pakistan to see this concert and it was well worth the hassle...THANK YOU YNGWIE, VAI, and SATRIANI...u guys ROCK

Great show, great sound! Quickly got tired of Yngwie's "Kick the Pick" routine. Granted, he is a total monster on the fretboard, but I think he forgot the type of audience that he is playing to on this tour...guitar heads and their wives/girlfriends (if they are forced to take them). We could care less about the prancing, toe-pointing, guitar-flipping, etc. If I had seen a front row full of screaming, scantily clad, looking for backstage pass groupies, I would be saying "Go for it Yngwie, show 'em what you got"! But, most of his theatrics were lost on this crowd and made him look downright silly...plus the way he treated his tech solidified his rep as being an ass! All of that being said, he still proved that he is the master the harmonic minor scale and showed us that he has a few blues licks too. One final comment on Yngwie...Dude, get somebody to fix your tone! As long as he was playing on the high E, B, and G, everything sounded great. The sound on the lower strings were unrecognizable...basically we heard the pick attack on the strings and that was it. It sounded like he palm-muted the E, A, and D strings all night. Now, Steve's set was beyond unbelievable! A true showman without getting campy! He's a master of technique and his tone almost made me jizz myself! I think I might take a look at getting a Carvin Legacy and a Jem...and I'm a diehard Gibson man! Also, this tour should have been call "G4" with Tony McAlpine on the stage. With what litte guitar he played he proved that he can still shred with the best of them. Joe once again proved why he is the best in the world. I sat there totally mesmerized by the one thing that makes Joe stand out from all other pickers...his incredible sense of melody and phrasing! He doesn't have to run sweeps up and down the neck (even though he can). He can "say" more with a simple pentatonic run than most shredders can with a thousand notes from every scale and mode imaginable. I loved the Jam, but once again Yngwie kind of made it difficult. He couldn't be bothered to finish up the songs with Joe and Steve...he had to camp it up and run off the stage and get another guitar or drink of water and then run back in to stike the last note with the guys...one time he almost nocked Steve to the floor while trying to do one of his David Lee Roth spins! All in all, it was a great show! Maybe for next years tour, Joe could contact local Washington DC guitar god, Michael Fath, and have him on the stage. If anyone could match licks with Joe and Steve, it would be Michael!

This was my 3rd G3, 3rd time seeing Steve, 2nd time for Yngwie, and 6th time for Joe. Best set I've seen from Joe in a while. Steve was great; what a band! Would love to have seen more of Tony, especially after having been stood up JAXX this summer. Must agree that the criticisms of Yngwie have been unfair. He is european and from a different culture. I bet the fans on the european leg of this tour appreciated him a lot more. At worst, you should enjoy his amazing talent as a musician, and at best, appreciate his effort and enthusiasm as a performer. Anyone remember Eric at the Capitol Ballroom G3? A fantastic musician and guitar player but painfully shy with no stage presence. Yngwie and Steve seemed to do fine together in final set as both Hendrix tunes were excellant. Perhaps they all started this tour with little to no practice together and are only now gelling. Sound was also good and this was probably the first time I've seen Joe when he was not too loud. The new axes sound great Joe! Steve always brings an element of intimacy to the show and really connects with audiences. Who's the next up Joe? Tony Macalpine? Gary Hoey? Al DiMeola? Greg Howe? Andy Timmons? Steve Morse? Larry Mitchell? Howard Hart? Well, it won't matter, I'LL BE THERE. Thanks for the great show guys!

The show was awesome. Many have said that Yngwie is "too over the top." There's no doubt about it, the man DEFINES over the top. However, that's just his niche. If his stage antics bothered you that much, you obviously weren't paying enough attention to the sounds coming out of his guitar. The guy, as Steve said himself last night, is "a freak of nature". It was a privelage for me to see such an amazing guitarist join forces with Steve and Satch. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a guitarist and have no problem sitting through 45 minutes of shred, but last night was the first time I've seen Yngwie play live and the guy simply has MAD SKILL. This G3 was just as good as the last one with Petrucci... More to the point, Steve was unbelievable (no Mike Keneally, but luckily Tony MacAlpine, a "G" in his own right, took his place), Joe was unbelievable, as always, and Yngwie was unbelievable. They were having fun, we were having fun, it was one of the best nights I've had in a while. Thanks guys, you are all awesome.
